Tbe Drowned Wan Again The OTja tery Molved. The m) stery connected with tbe un known white man whose body was foui.d floating in tbe river near the foot of Nun street, on Friday morning, an account of which appeared in our paper yesterday, has to all appearances been solved; at least, so far as his identity is concerned. It ap pears that James Powers, 2nd mate of the schr. John H. Convene, Captain Plummer, which cleared from this place for Port au Prince on the 8lh inst., went to the Sea man's Home about 1 o'clock on New Tear's night in a very intoxicated condition, being scarcely able to stand up. He re mained there until about 2 o'clock, when he went out, since which time he has never been seen or beard of. A seaman stopping at the "Home," who claims that be was well acquainted with Powers, says there is no doubt that the body alluded to is that of the missing mate. He gave Special Coro ner Van Amringe an accurate description of the deceased, so far as the latter was able to judge by the appearance of the body after remaining in 'he water so long, on Friday evening, and, upon beingshown the articles found on the person of the drowned man, be fully identified them as having belonged to Powers, he having seen them in bis ' possession, and having, on the very day of the unfortuuate man's disappearance at night, off ered to buy the policeman's silver-plated rattle, referred; to as having been taken Ifrorn the podkrfT of deceased. He also says that Powers was an . Irishman, and has no relatives in this country to bis knowledge. ' Ceutennlal Project Probabljr Spotted. A scheme which was on foot to fit up the fine schooner Charley Bucki, Captain Bagley, now in this port, for a Centennial trip to Philadelphia, has, we learn, been abandoned. It was tbe design to put ber in shape to accommodate about sixty per sons, providing her with suitable berths and other conveniences so that the party could remain as long as tbey pleased, be at comparatively trifling expense, and yet have all tbe comforts and accommodations 0.RN; .15 tbey would enjoy at tbe over-crowded ho tels. The Charley Bucki is ' a newcraft, perfectly free from all ' offensive odors which would attach to an older vessel, and would be in every way excellently adapted to the purpose. Captain Bagley entert ained the plan above outlined, and mentioned she matter to us ; but, after consultation-with a few of our prominent citizens, was induced to relinquish ; the project as not likely to prove a success. , Should any considerable number of our citizens propose to attend tbe Centennial and remain any reasonable length of time ibis would present an excel lent opportunity. J. ... Take tare. - Complaint is made by the Signal Office that certain ill disposed parties make tar gets of the glass insulators supporting the Government telegraph line.' More than a dozen glasses have been shot at and bro ken on Eagle Island. This may be con sidered good fun by tbe sportive shooter, but perhaps he is not aware of the heavy penalties attached to such recreations. By special act of Congress entitled "An act to protect lines of telegraph 'constructed or used by ihe. United States from malicious injury or obstruction," approved March 23d, 1874, it is decreed that any .one con victcd of maliciously injuring a govern ment telegraph line shall be punished with imprisonment for a term of three years, or by a fine of one thousand dollars, or with both. : We are requested to say that Mr. Sey both has employed a special watchman to protect the line in this vicinity, and that anybody caught in such actsascemplained of above, will be dealt with according to law. Bad Tarieli, Complaint is made that some one has been shootingthe glass insulators off the poles of the Smitbville telegraph line, along the causeway on Eagle Island. We trust the shooting has been done without thought or .knowledge of the serious inconvenience to the Signal Service and to the commer cial public, of this city which results from tbe breaking of these insulators. It should be understood that when one of them is shot off it is liable to seriously interfere with or entirely interrupt the transmission of messages over tbe line until the damage can be repaired, thereby causing serious losses to the shipping interests of the port to which the telegraph has proved an , un mixed benefit.; If, however, the mischief has been done ; from malicious motives, 'it may be well to remind the perpetrator that sportsmen are not so plentiful in that neighborhood but that j there may be some possibility of their -presence being noticed, and that in case of detection a heavy pen alty is attached to the pursuit of such vicious sport, i Runaway. ..j . We are informed that a horse belonging tn Mr. J. L. Boatwright.vof tbe firm of Cbas. D. Myers. & Co., was standing at tached to a buggy at the place of business of the firm on Front street, yesterday morn ing, when the bridle was slipped off for the purpose of substituting another, and tbe horse a fine, spirited animal embraced the opportunity to make a dash down Front street At tbe corner of Market the bugey came into collision with tbe lamp-post. The U S. mail box attached to tbe post was knocked into a dozen pieces, and the vehicle badly wrecked, one wheel being broken completely in two. The horse was also slightly injured. I Of his further, ca reer, we know only that he was eventually cap'ured, and that tbe general results of his adventure may be summed up as above stated. ... ,-. - -- , . Grand Ball.
